The two top contenders at worlds, gymnastic world championships, this year held in Montreal Canada, had injuries and withdrew from the competition. The American favorite who was favored to win is named Smith.
The three other American gymnasts on the team are also all capable gymnasts. Hurd is the youngest of the four and she squeaked by the gymnast from Canada to win the worlds all around competition. The gymnast from Canada is named Black. Can't remember her first name, sorry. I'm too sleepy to look it up. Smith's first name is Ragan - and, Hurd's first name is Morgan.
The other gymnast from Canada who was in the running fell off the high bars and lost too many points to be a contender for a medal. There are several very good gymnasts from other countries this time around. Probably wont see dominance like Simone Biles again for a long time but there is a talented field, in all.
The coming Olympics should be one of the best competitions since Atlanta.
I haven't watched gymnastics in a while. The worlds was the first since the U.S. championships that I watched and before that it goes back a while. Smith won the U.S. championship.
The U.S. Women's World Team is Jade Carey, Morgan Hurd, Ashton Locklear and Ragan Smith.
The new points system is sort of something that a person might need to get used to before the Olympics.
To most people it would be clear that Black's performance on the balance beam was not as good as Hurd's. But, that the floor routine of Black was as good or better than Hurd's. It seemed that Black would win the competition . The crowd favorite was Black, being from Canada, I can tell you that. But the judging gave the point edge to Hurd.
There are symbols next to the scores and the previous scores are by the symbols. So you have to be alert to listen to the specific score because it's confusing and if you don't see very well your going to get irritated trying to see the tiny little picture by each score.
The floor routine seems to be the lowest scores. 13.5 is a seemingly good score. There are a lot of scores in the 12.5 range. 12.666 came up more than once which is kind of creepy.
Most people still wish they would just go back to ten's. But what do we know.
Good luck at the Olympics!
